Ready for Earth Month?! This coming month has an exciting excess of events and opportunities to connect with others in the Latine community working on sustainability! Here at Sustainability Sin Fronteras, we are actually welcoming a new contributor, Karyme Ortiz, a current student at Math and Science College Preparatory. Her awesome dedication to her LA community and sustainability has brought her to SSF, contributing to topics ranging from vegan tamales to the Murphy Oil Drilling site near her neighborhood. We look forward to continuing to collaborate!
In other news, as the academic year nears its end, I am happy to announce that I will be passing the baton to fellow founding members Jose Guzman-Wug and Mayte Abrica as the executive editors of the newsletter. Jose, now taking the lead in putting this newsletter together, take it away!
Hello everyone! My name is Jose Guzman-Wug and I will be taking on the role of Co-Executive Director of Sustainability Sin Fronteras with Mayte Abrica. I am extremely excited to take on this role and will be giving more of a personal introduction on our next edition. Like Natalie mentioned, there are a variety of events for Earth Month so make sure to get out there when you can and really make your voices heard in these conversations being had. ¿Listos para el Mes de la Tierra? ¡Este próximo mes trae una gran cantidad de eventos y oportunidades para conectar con otras personas de la comunidad latina que trabajan en el ámbito de sostenibilidad! Aquí en Sustainability Sin Fronteras, le damos la bienvenida a una nueva colaboradora: Karyme Ortiz, estudiante actual de Math and Science College Preparatory. Su admirable dedicación a su comunidad en Los Ángeles y a la sostenibilidad la ha traído hasta SSF, donde colabora con temas que van desde tamales veganos hasta el sitio de perforación petrolera de Murphy Oil. ¡Esperamos seguir colaborando!
Por otro lado, a medida que el año académico se acerca a su fin, me complace anunciar que pasaré la batuta a mis compañeros y miembros fundadores, Jose Guzman-Wug y Mayte Abrica, quienes asumirán el cargo de editores ejecutivos del boletín informativo. ¡Hola a todos! Mi nombre es Jose Guzman-Wug y asumiré el rol de Co-Director Ejecutivo de Sustainability Sin Fronteras junto con Mayte Abrica. Estoy muy emocionado de tomar este puesto y daré una introducción más personal en nuestra próxima edición. Como mencionó Natalie, hay una variedad de eventos durante el Mes de la Tierra, así que asegúrense de participar cuando puedan y de hacer que sus voces se escuchen en estas conversaciones. ¡Que tengan un excelente Mes de la Tierra y hablamos pronto!

Meet Dr. Miguel O. Román, a leading climate scientist and Deputy Director for Atmospheres in NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center. Since joining NASA in 2009, he has played a key role in advancing our understanding of Earth’s atmosphere through satellite data, leading major science teams such as the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) science team that track land, climate, and environmental changes. Dr. Román’s work focuses on climate change, disaster risk reduction, and sustainability, using data-driven approaches to better understand how environmental crises impact communities. His research is especially recognized for highlighting how socially vulnerable and underserved populations are disproportionately affected by major disasters. Beyond his research, he contributes to global scientific collaboration, serving in leadership roles with NASA’s LANCE User Working Group and participating in national science and sustainability initiatives. He is also a Senior Member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEE). He earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Puerto Rico at Mayagüez, a master’s from Cornell University, and a Ph.D. from Boston University. In 2016, he received the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers, recognizing his impactful contributions to science and society. Dr. Román’s work not only advances climate science, but also helps ensure that vulnerable communities are understood and better protected in the face of climate change.
Conoce al Dr. Miguel O. Román, un destacado científico del clima y Director de Atmósferas en el Centro de Vuelo Espacial Goddard de la NASA. Desde que se unió a la NASA en 2009, él ha avanzado nuestra comprensión de la atmósfera terrestre mediante datos satelitales, liderando importantes equipos científicos como el del Espectrorradiómetro de Imágenes de Resolución. El lidera equipos científicos como Espectrorradiómetro de Imágenes de Resolución Moderada (MODIS) que monitorean cambios en la tierra, el clima y el medio ambiente en NASA. El trabajo del Dr. Román se centra en el cambio climático, la reducción del riesgo de desastres y la sostenibilidad, utilizando datos para comprender mejor cómo las crisis ambientales afectan a las comunidades. Su investigación es especialmente reconocida por mostrar cómo las poblaciones socialmente vulnerables y desatendidas son afectadas de manera desproporcionada por desastres mayores. Aparte de su investigación, contribuye a la colaboración científica global, desempeñando roles de liderazgo en el Grupo de Trabajo de Usuarios LANCE de la NASA y participando en iniciativas nacionales de ciencia y sostenibilidad. También es miembro sénior del Instituto de Ingenieros Eléctricos y Electrónicos (IEEE). Obtuvo su licenciatura en la Universidad de Puerto Rico en Mayagüez, una maestría en la Universidad de Cornell y un doctorado en la Universidad de Boston. En 2016, recibió el Premio Presidencial para Científicos e Ingenieros en su Inicio de su Carrera, en reconocimiento a sus importantes contribuciones a la ciencia y la sociedad.
