Welcome to the eleventh edition of Sustainability Sin Fronteras. This past month, we celebrated Climate Change Awareness Week AND Hispanic Heritage Month! As the academic semester has begun for us here at USC, we have also added a new team member who will be leading our Latine in Sustainability Spotlight: Katherine Ramirez! We are excited to welcome her to the team and tap into her many interests, including GIS mapping and Latin fusion dancing.
I’m Natalie Lopez, Executive Editor and student at USC. Alongside my team, Jose Guzman-Wug, Sharis Flores, Mayte Abrica, and Katherine Ramierez, we are featuring some exciting events and professional opportunities coming up for the Fall!
Bienvenidos a la undécima edición de Sustainability Sin Fronteras. El mes pasado celebramos la Semana de Concientización sobre el Cambio Climático y el Mes de la Herencia Hispana. Con el inicio del semestre académico en USC, hemos incorporado a una nueva integrante que liderará nuestro Premio de Latine en Sostenibilidad: ¡Katherine Ramírez! Nos complace darle la bienvenida y aprovechar sus múltiples intereses, como hacer mapas en GIS y el baile fusión latino.

CicLAvia Keeps Pedaling Despite ICE Concerns

But this event almost didn’t happen. Originally planned for June 22nd, the celebration was postponed after ICE raids swept through the area earlier that month. In response, CicLAvia released a statement on Instagram reaffirming its mission and solidarity with Los Angeles’ immigrant communities. When the day finally came, people still showed up even with the fear of immigration enforcement lingering in the background. Nalleli Cobo-Uriate
Meet Nalleli Cobo-Uriarte, a 2022 Goldman Environmental Prize winner, activist, and storyteller. At just nine years old, she began her activism with People Not Pozos, going door to door to mobilize her neighbors against an urban oil well near her home in Los Angeles that was harming her and her community’s health. Her persistence in shutting down the AllenCo site led Physicians for Social Responsibility–LA to hire a toxicologist, whose findings confirmed the site’s dangerous air pollution and resulted in its suspension. In 2015, Nalleli co-founded the South Central Youth Leadership Coalition, to broaden the fight for environmental justice by pushing to phase out oil wells across Los Angeles. The coalition later sued the city for violating the California Environmental Quality Act and won. Today, Nalleli continues to be a powerful leader in environmental justice and policy. This year, she was recognized by People en Español as one of the top 20 Latinos leading the fight against climate change and was named a 776 Fellow for youth-led climate innovation.

Con tan solo nueve años, comenzó su activismo con People Not Pozos, yendo de puerta en puerta para movilizar a sus vecinos contra un pozo de petróleo cerca de su casa en Los Ángeles que estaba afectando su salud y la de su comunidad. Su persistencia en cerrar el pozo urbano llevó a Physicians for Social Responsibility-LA a contratar a un toxicólogo que confirmaron la contaminación del aire y resultaron en su suspensión.
